Where Does a Mold Project Start—and Where Does It End?

A mold project rarely starts with machining. It starts with the quality of the information. Product 3D data, tolerance-controlled 2D drawings, material, color, cosmetic surfaces, assembly relationships, estimated volume, and target timing all affect the tooling plan. If those inputs are still changing, the quotation and schedule can only be based on assumptions.

After review, the work moves through DFM, mold design, material preparation, CNC and EDM machining, assembly, and trials. The first trial checks mold movement, molding behavior, appearance, dimensions, and assembly—not simply whether a part can be produced. Each issue should have a location, impact, owner, and closure status, with revisions kept under control.

The end point also needs a definition. For one customer it may be an accepted mold; for another it may include approved samples, a pilot run, inspection records, packing, and follow-up molding. Writing the delivery boundary into the quotation and technical approval is one of the simplest ways to avoid disagreement.
