Why Machining and Inspection Must Be Planned Together for Mold Inserts

Mold inserts commonly contain complex profiles, deep and narrow features, small radii, and critical fitting surfaces. One operation rarely produces every feature efficiently, so CNC, EDM, grinding, polishing, and fitting may be combined. Process sequence affects allowance, distortion, datums, and final assembly.

If inspection takes place only after completion, a problem is usually more expensive to correct. A better plan places checkpoints after rough machining, heat treatment, finishing, or completion of a critical feature, according to risk.

The drawing should define datums, tolerances, and surface requirements, and the measurement method must suit the geometry. Where a dimension cannot be measured directly, an alternative method should be agreed before manufacturing. Machining and inspection working from the same datum system is essential to a reliable fit.
